Styles/Expressions of Worship

Why do people sometimes bow and kneel in worship?
In acknowledging God's presence, we want to express a humble acceptance of His Lordship over our lives and our corporate worship. "Come let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker." (Psalm 95:6)

Why are there occasional periods of silence?
For the most part, we must be silent to listen. "Listen and hear my voice and listen and hear my words." (Isaiah 28:23)

How is giving money part of worship?
Worship is giving of ourselves to God. Contributing financially is evidence of that surrender and shows genuine concern for His work. "Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things in all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work." (2 Corinthians 9:7-8)

What about the use of drama and visual arts in worship?
We have found visual elements to be a helpful teaching tool to illustrate the truth of God's Word. "Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; He did not say anything to them without using a parable." (Matthew 13:34)

How is listening to the message part of worship?
Listening is an obedient response to the spoken word. Giving attention to God’s word with our hearts and minds is His desire. This is one way God speaks to us. His word reveals the “good news” that Jesus Christ is the way to eternal life. We celebrate God when we honor His word. “For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living word of God.” (1 Peter 1:23)

What is the role of prayer in corporate worship?
Prayer is a divinely instituted manner of communicating to, and hearing from God. They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. (Acts 2:42)

Why do we occasionally incorporate stories of real life change?
Sharing with others what God has done in our life can encourage those who hear and bring God glory. ...Jesus said “Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” So the man went away and began to tell how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed. (Mark 5:19b-20)
