Styles/Expressions of Worship

What about clapping our hands?
Clapping is a universally accepted sign of approval and a way of expressing joy in the Lord. "Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy." (Psalm 47:1)

Why do we use a projection system?
Projecting lyrics on a screen rather than from books permits greater flexibility in choice of music, but more importantly establishes a posture of worship. As our eyes are lifted up, we sing out to God rather than down into our books and our hands are free to participate in worship. "I lift my eyes to you, to you whose throne is in heaven..." (Psalm 123:1)) Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul." (Psalm 143:8)

What about lifting our hands?
When we lift our hands to God, we are exalting His character and expressing personal humility and dependence on God. "...I call to you for help, as I lift my hands toward your most Holy place." (Psalm 28:2)

"Lift up your hands in the sanctuary and praise the Lord." (Psalm 134:4)

"I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name will I lift up my hands." (Psalm 63:4)

"May my prayer be set before you like incense; may the lifting of my hands be like the evening sacrifice." (Psalm 141:2)

What about using all kinds of instruments?
Musical instruments are used in order to aid and assist our worship experience. The use of strings, brass, woodwinds, and percussion instruments are all recorded in the Bible.

"Praise Him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise Him with the harp and lyre, praise Him with tambourine and dancing, praise Him with the strings and flute, praise Him with the clash of cymbals..." (Psalm 150:3-5)

Why is praise sometimes enthusiastic?
God's message of salvation is "good news" and one way of giving Him glory is through celebration. "Shout for joy to God, all the earth! Sing to the glory of His name; Make His praise glorious!" (Psalm 66:1-2)

Why do we sometimes stand to worship?
Standing is a sign of respect and honor in response to our holy and awesome God. "...they will acknowledge the holiness of the Holy One, and will stand in awe of the God of Israel." (Isaiah 29:23b)
