Update Colombia on our radar screen April 08 PDF Print E-mail

Dear Friends,

I hope this letter finds each of you doing well and enjoying life! Since returning from our visit to our family in the States late January we have been hard at work here in São Gabriel with Bible teaching, discipling of the Wanano men and women and the many other projects that make up seeing a solid church for years to come.

Shortly after we arrived back, we got some really neat news! We were told by the NTM leaders in Colombia where we worked with the Wanano for 13 years that due to restored stability in the region that we could return to a small town a day away from Taina where we used to live to disciple the believers from there. We had asked their permission to do this last year and were so pleasantly shocked to get a “Yes you can!” back from them. Our real desire is to get to stay for periods of time in Taina itself and disciple and work there with the struggling church. So now with this comes many questions needing answers.

“Wow, Father, every time we asked you to let us return to Mitú you have told us “No” for 12 long years. Now you are re-opening this door. This excites us but how should we go through this door? Make us wise. Make a way to see this happen. How will we juggle being in two countries at once? How could we best set up seasonal house keeping there while we minister? Father, we will need to get visas to go into Colombia. There are logistics of living here in Brazil and traveling to and from Colombia. How can we best minister once in Colombia?” We need your help in praying hard with us on this one. Thanks.

I, Barry did some rough Bible translation of the verses that are used to teach the evangelistic Bible lessons back in the early 1990s. Well, I have made it my goal this year along with my partner Lindy to polish up those verses and he to do his and get them final consultant checked and published. I have sent the 10 chapters of Genesis that I did to the translation consultant to check over. Once that happens he needs to come here and will ask Wanano language helpers hundreds of questions to make sure the correct meaning is understood by them. Once he is satisfied with the quality, them we are ready to publish it. I am currently working over the 14th chapter of Exodus. It has been a really hard portion to do as there are many things to keep track of for a Wanano that are strange. Denise has been a part in this by doing back translations of what the Wanano language says and putting them into English, which the consultant will use to study over to make his checks from. Can you please pray for this work so that the Word will truly be His own, spoken in Wanano. Thanks.

Lindy and I take turns teaching the Wanano Christians as part of the discipling process. We just finished 1 Corinthians and have started into 1 Timothy. While teaching in Chapter 2:1 where it talks about when we pray to tell Father our thanks, I asked the group what they thought that meant. Mario piped up and said, “Well, what I get out of this is that when I pray and Father God answers the way I wanted, to tell him how that makes me happy and thank Him for that. It also means that when I get sick or have hard times and I pray for Him to take them away and he does not that I should tell him thanks then too. Because he is using the hard things to teach me to be a stronger and better believer, I should tell him that that does make me happy.” Wow. That was a rebuke and blessing to my heart. Neat to see him growing! Pray for Mario and his newly wed wife Nilsa. She is not yet saved, so pray for his growth and her salvation.

Our fourth child, Ryan just turned 18, April 11. He is in his senior year and will graduate May 23. Only one left at home. Wahh. He sent in his application for New Tribes Bible Institute in Waukesha, Wisconsin and was accepted. Some neat friends of ours in Wis. have opened up their home to have him this summer till school starts this August. He will be just minutes from his brother and his wife, Evan and Carrie. What a blessing! So Ryan will need to adjust quickly and get a job to earn the first down payment before school begins. Please pray for him as he begins his life on his own for the Father’s provisions for him to make this all happen. Pray for us as we adjust to the 4th of 5 not being with us any more. Austin our 9th grader will spend the summer here with us in SGC.

Well, this has gotten long enough. We are thankful for your ministry of prayer, giving and concern for us as we work with you to see healthy churches thriving among the Wanano people. May Father keep on blessing you and meeting all your needs.
