Safe Appropriate Touch

  • The Safe Zones

With children of any age, it’s important that affection appear and be received as an innocent
gesture. “Bony” parts of the body, such as the neck, shoulder, or hand, tend to be “safe
zones.”

  • Short and Sweet

Affirming physical contact with students is best given quickly rather than with a lingering
touch.

  • Be Open

It will help you avoid misunderstandings and accusations if you will remember to touch “out
in the open.” An open position (side by side) is preferable to a closed one (front to front).
